Tesla Model 3 and Y Get V2H Bidirectional Charging

Tesla has formally introduced Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) bidirectional charging functionality for the Model 3 and Model Y, expanding a feature previously available exclusively on the Cybertruck.

  • Hardware Requirements: Enabling this functionality requires a recently manufactured vehicle equipped with the upgraded PCS2 Lite onboard inverter, an integrated Tesla Powerwall 3 storage system, and a compatible Tesla Wall Connector.
  • How It Works: Instead of supplying power directly to household loads, the electric vehicle serves as a secondary energy reserve for the home battery. When grid service is interrupted and the Powerwall drains, the vehicle simultaneously supplies household power and replenishes the battery architecture.
  • Capacity: A standard EV battery unit can extend home power resilience by approximately two full days, providing a continuous power discharge rate up to 11.5 kW.

Drivers of qualifying production models can check system eligibility through the "Powershare Support" interface on their vehicle display, while potential retrofit options for earlier Model Y builds remain under evaluation in official service technical docs.

Renewable Energy News in Michigan

Michigan continues to pave the way toward a clean and resilient energy grid through ambitious legislation and community support programs:

‍

  • Statewide Clean Energy Standards: Under Public Act 235, Michigan electric providers are required to achieve a 15% renewable portfolio through 2029, 50% by 2030, 60% by 2035, and 100% clean energy by 2040, alongside a statewide 2,500 MW energy storage target.
  • Expanded Distributed Generation (DG) Cap: The statutory cap for utility DG programs has expanded tenfold from 1% to 10% of peak load, opening new opportunities for homeowners and businesses to connect rooftop solar systems to the grid.
  • Renewables Ready Communities Awards (RRCA): The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has distributed millions in RRCA funding to local municipalities hosting renewable energy and storage projects, supporting local roads, public safety, and infrastructure.
  • Michigan Home Energy Rebates (MiHER): EGLE's rebate program is ramping up across the state to fund energy efficiency and electrification upgrades for up to 15,000 households.

    Michigan Utilities News

A recent study released by the Citizens Utility Board of Michigan highlights significant grid reliability challenges, indicating that state residents endured the nation's longest service restoration delays in 2023, averaging roughly 12 hours per disruption.

Key findings from the utility performance analysis include:

    • Nation-Trailing Reliability: Michigan recorded the slowest restoration response nationwide and placed second-worst in total duration of power interruptions per customer, with consumer advocates attributing the widespread delays directly to major electric providers DTE and Consumers Energy.
    • Disputed Performance Metrics: Utility representatives and regulators assert that excluding major storm disruptions reveals a 23% reliability enhancement from 2019 through 2023; however, ratepayer advocates emphasize that omitting severe weather distorts the consumer experience, as storm events increase average outage duration from 2.5 hours to over 18 hours.
    • Regulatory Oversight & Penalties: The Michigan Public Service Commission has mandated corrective action frameworks alongside potential financial penalties reaching $10 million for non-performance—measures that energy providers report are already yielding noticeable reductions in service restoration times for 2024.
    • Pending Rate Adjustments: While local households currently face the highest residential electricity costs in the Midwest, Consumers Energy and DTE are requesting combined rate increases near $1 billion to finance vegetation management and grid modernizations.
